Sony has been a long time supporter of the Android community. In the past, the company has helped the developer community by releasing open-source Jelly Bean drivers for its Xperia devices, releasing beta ROMs and more. Now, just in time for the holiday season, Sony has some KitKat goodness available for its Xperia device owners via its AOSP for Xperia project.  Sony has updated its Xperia for AOSP project with the latest version of Android — KitKat — and has also updated the relevant device trees, binaries and build details for all its supported devices. The AOSP for Xperia project from Sony is not really new, and the company has used this project in the past to provide developers with an AOSP build of Jelly Bean for some of its high-end devices. Apart from the updated AOSP version, Sony has also added support for the Xperia L — a mid-range Android device powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor. Considering that Google has focused on improving performance of Android in low-end devices, this move from Sony definitely makes sense. Other supported devices include the Xperia Z, ZL and Tablet Z. Sadly, the AOSP build for the above devices is not stable enough for daily use. This is because necessary functions like Bluetooth and GPS have been disabled by Sony, and the various sensors, NFC and LED light are only partially working. Anyways, if you are interested in making an AOSP build of Android 4.4 KitKat on your Xperia device, head over to Sony’s developer website for more information.
