With the new iPhone out, the new Nexus, and the new iPads, it’s pretty safe to say that the rest of the year is going to be boring. Thanksgiving will come sooner than you think, and then right after that there’s Christmas. Hope you’re ready for binge eating. For those wanting to feed their gadget lust, however, you’re going to to wait until January for the Consumer Electronics Show. While CES certainly isn’t as important now as it used to be back when this writer started covering the mobile industry, it’s still a place where important things get talked about.
Now Microsoft has been the keynote speaker at CES for years upon years. Decades upon decades. And centuries upon centuries. That’s only recently changed. Last year it was Qualcomm’s turn, and this year it’s going to be Sony who has to put on an impressive show. According to PhoneArena, we’re not going to see any flagship phones there, but history has shown us that Sony’s not shy to announce devices a month before Mobile World Congress. Can Sony even make a phone that the world will lust after? They have all the right ingredients over there in Japan, but they’ve been repeatedly fumbling the ball when it comes to execution. The Xperia Z was beautiful, but it had a horrible screen. The Z1 somewhat fixed the screen, but the camera turned to garbage. What’s next? Great screen, great camera, but impossibly tiny battery? Here’s hoping Sony gets to be the next company handling the Nexus devices.
